SUZY’S DIARY

http://www.certainshops.com/storage/images/newsletter/0802/suzybranded.jpg

Running a small business from home can be lonely at times.  When I found myself deliberately dropping a glove in the high street just so someone would say “excuse me” and a short interaction would ensue, I realised something had to be done. Fast.

Thank goodness for CertainShops.  I huddled in a corner of an internet cafe and went online: within minutes I had booked a free 15 minute consultation with a Feng Shui practitioner who could help make my home less cluttered and encourage visitors, and while she’s at it she’s going to help me declutter my office as well.  I inquired about having a party organised with a fluffy pink cocktail bar hired in for extra fun, and booked in for some motivational inspirational coaching sessions for good measure.

By the time Spring arrives and I don’t need to wear gloves anymore, I will no longer need to resort to the ‘fair weather’ ploy of ‘accidentally’ losing my right shoe – “Excuse me…….”

Santa’s stuck in the chimney, business news & NeverLand – CertainShops Xmas newsletter 2009

SUZY’S DIARY

http://www.certainshops.com/storage/images/newsletter/0802/suzybranded.jpg

It’s just not fair. Still over a week until Xmas Eve, and I come home to find a huge bloke stuck upside down in my fireplace, wearing red. It did not take long for me to ascertain that this premature Santa was suffering from a major life crisis – disruptive workforce and problems with the Reindeer Union, loss of job satisfaction and strife with Mrs Santa who seems to be spending a lot of time with her new driving instructor, a large Elf called Bernard. I had to do something to sort this Santa out – apart from clashing horribly with the orange sofa, I couldn’t light the fire so help was needed – fast!

Thank goodness for CertainShops. I linked Santa up to the internet and persuaded him to talk to some commercial lawyers, get his life and spirit back on track with some coaching, and chat with our collaborative solicitor about how to keep things peaceful with Mrs Santa if she decided to run off with the Elf.

As to how I’m going to get him out of the chimney is another matter entirely. I could try Feng Shui – but maybe a diet of raw vegetables combined with the children tugging on his beard will do the trick, hopefully just in time for Xmas…..

Professional in the spotlight:

New to CertainShops comes the highly recommended Elissa Da Costa – Barrister, Mediator and Collaborative Lawyer

Using a creative and innovative approach in finding solutions to Client’s financial matters on divorce, Elissa is also an expert in cohabitation claims, a formidable Scrabble player and part time renovator of a Steam Locomotive (but definitely not an anorak!) Read more about Elissa here…….

SUZY’S DIARY

http://www.certainshops.com/storage/images/newsletter/0802/suzybranded.jpg

Where have I been for the last year? Stranded out at sea crying S-O-S to no avail, that’s where. Finally I caught a ride to a small island hanging on to the back of a passing turtle. Luckily, the Galapagos Islands now have 3G and with my home make solar mobile charger (patent pending with the help of Baylis Brands) I am up and running again, able to steer my business efficiently thanks to a growing band of CertainShops professionals.

Thank goodness for CertainShops. Despite being marooned, I have been able to create a suitable office on my island hideaway. I emailed photos from my phone of my location to our Feng Shui expert for advice on where best to place the bamboo door to my workspace to attract the most wealth into my business, indulged in a free initial investment consultation with Private Wealth Management via Skype, and ordered a Cocktail in a Box from my events company for a corporate gift with a difference.

I am finding that parenting via Facebook is working very well. The children seem to have survived well without me – how fortunate that they managed to hack into my internet bank accounts while I’ve been away. Now I just need to wait for one of these blooming turtles to migrate and take me back to civilization.

SUZY’S DIARY

http://www.certainshops.com/storage/images/newsletter/0802/suzybranded.jpg

“Mummy, come out now, I know you’re in there” bellowed my young daughter under the door. “You can’t hide under the stairs for ever.  Come out now and cook Xmas dinner or I will disconnect your wireless connection!”   She had already confiscated my IPhone so I gave up trying to catch up on emails and brought my laptop and myself out of the shoe cupboard and admitted defeat.”Don’t worry Mummy” my sons’ comforted me.  Our Xmas present to you means you can relax and let proper skilled professionals do the work for you.  We’ve been onto CertainShops and your new website is all taken care of.”  Sure enough, my computer literate angels had commissioned a Feng Shui expert to improve the navigation on my latest website, a graphic designer to come up with a great new look, and an SEO expert to help drive traffic to the site.Sadly, the pocket money of all three children combined did not quite cover the costs.  But hey, it’s the thought that counts.

How Web Professionals Should Be Proactive In a Recession

Jeremiah Owyang Sr Analyst at Forrester Research: Social Computing

Posted: 06 Dec 2008 06:30 AM CST

Things are going to get worse before they get betterIt’s official, we’re in a recession, says economists. Four quarters since Q4 2007 indicate this economic change and Bloomberg reports that “The U.S. economy may be headed for its deepest and longest recession since World War II”.

It gets worse, Associated Press reports that Employers cut 533K jobs in Nov., most in 34 years”. My job is to listen to the marketplace, and I didn’t hear anyone talking about this until Sept 2008, it’s as if US, and the world were taken by surprise.

Perhaps the scariest thing for most, is that no matter how hard you work, you could get layed off. Your division, your budget, or your role could get eliminated.

I’m not all doom and gloom, here’s how you can be proactive:

Learn How to Adjust at Your Day JobI survived 10 rounds of layoffs and was the final 12.5% of Exodus before I went to work at World Savings, what did I do learn? The trick is to stay flexible and demonstrate you can adapt, increase revenues, or use your skills in a scalable and effecient way. You’ll also need to properly internal market your abilities within your corporation or with your clients to demonstrate why you and your services give greater return out the end. Fortunately, the web can be such a tool –if you know how to do it right.

Understand How Social Media is a Risk and OpportunitySocial media has an opportunity in a recession, these tools are cheap, some marketing campaigns range from 10-50k on the low end, far less expensive than any traditional marketing. Of course, with comes great risk: doing it wrong can result in a punking, not doing anything at all could leave you exposed, and most brands overlook the amount of labor required to develop these programs. As a result, I’m working on an upcoming report, and we’re surveying social media marketers to find out if they’re going to increase –or decrease –their social media resources during a downturn. In fact, we’re re jigging some of my research agenda to meet the needs of the market and client –so stay tuned.

Use Online Networking Tools to ConnectIf you’re a web professional, or are involved with social media in your career, I want you to network with others in my Web Strategy Facebook Group (there are over 9000 folks there), or within the Community Manager Facebook Group (over 2000 folks). You should also be updating your LinkedIn Profile (doing so triggers updates to others) and connect and reconnect with folks you need to synch up with.

Attend Real World EventsThe need to connect in person (yes, real life) is the core essence of what makes us social animals, and as a result, I’ve organized a free networking event called a Tweetup in Silicon Valley this coming Thursday, and 81 intent to come, and 62 others are interested. I found this list of things to do before you get layed off very helpful. If you’re in the area, come out to the event, bring your clients, meet clients, network with others, now is the time to link in with others, build your network before you need them.

Always Be Looking For OpportunitiesYou must always have your ear to the rail, listening and meeting folks that could potentially help you. I’ve made friends with some of the top recruiters in the web industry, and I’ve been helping them when the economy was good –think ahead. If you recently were layed off, or are looking to move up, Forrester is hiring a social media analyst (email your resume to jowyang at forrester dot com), and you can peruse the Web Strategy Job Board.

PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHTS

Sam Wilson of Eco Events gives some hot tips for those of you who will be exhibiting at shows and events during 2009.

Tips about exhibiting

As you know, exhibitions provide a truly exceptional promotional platform: they’re a unique, 3D experience which, unlike advertising, direct mail, PR or any other type of promotional media, allows your potential customers to feel, smell, taste and try on…The fact that the exhibition experience appeals to all the senses makes it an intensely memorable medium – and offers you the chance to bring your product or service to life in a way that no other medium can do. Below are a few tips that we hope will help you to capitalise on this opportunity:

3.1 Stand design

The layout and design of your stand should reflect what you want to achieve and differentiate you from every other exhibitor. Colour, light and layout are key in helping your stand tell the story about your product or service. Think carefully about your target audience and how you can clearly show the benefits of what you offer to them (don’t just describe what you do).

Think carefully about how people approach and leave the stand so that your display has maximum impact and access is easy and inviting. It is important to keep product layout clear and simple – visitors need to know at a glance what your stand is about – and they will make a decision about whether to invest time and money at your stand within the first few seconds. Suggested strategies: repetition of the same item can be highly effective and eye-catching; lighting can be used to define specific focal points; simple, clear, professional graphics can highlight your key messages very succinctly. Whatever your objectives for being at the show, your stand should be designed to be inviting, interesting and professional and to reflect the uniqueness of your product/company or service with impact.

Be sustainable: you don’t always need to buy expensive materials or items for your stand – and with the infrequent use of many stand items, to buy new materials is often a costly and inefficient use of time and money. With a little time and careful planning we have often been able to borrow items or be creative with what we already have. Charity shops, car boot sales, local papers and Freecycle are a great place to search for items for your stand. Start early, save money, and support the local community! Where branded materials/graphics are a necessity – make sure you leave out specific show details (e.g. name and dates) so you can re-use them again at the next event.

3.2 Promotional literature

Events are all about making the intangible tangible – even the smallest tangible item will help to sustain people’s idea of how good your service and product is. Are you planning to give visitors any information about your company or service? If so, will all visitors get the same thing? You may want to consider having different types of information available, so that expensive literature only reaches the hands of the most seriously interested visitor, with the simply curious taking away a business card. Think about using recycled/FSC paper and vegetable based inks, add these symbols onto your literature and develop your brand as considerate and forward-thinking.

Again – make sure that any literature does not contain specific show info so you can use any left-over materials at another time / the following year.

3.3 Activity on the stand

As your stand should be geared to reflecting your show objectives, make sure you think hard about how it will be used. If you are exhibiting clothes, for example, have you designed in enough private space for visitors to try on samples? If you are presenting a holiday destination, does your stand ‘paint a picture’ of that destination? Graphics, flavours, colours and even refreshments can all be used to make a real impact on all the senses and capture the unique appeal of a destination in a way that a conversation and brochure simply can’t. If you offering a therapy sample, how easy and tempting is it for visitors to walk on to the stand to participate. If you want to collect as many ‘leads’ as possible, have you offered an incentive and how easy is it for visitors to leave their details?

3.4 People, people, people

Exhibitions are all about people and the success of your participation is often down to the quality of the contact that you (and others working on your stand) have with the visitor. So do make sure that everyone’s properly briefed and they look friendly and approachable at all times (not forgetting that you’re on view all the time).

Stating the obvious (but it is surprising how this can be forgotten during a busy exhibition – make sure there are no half-eaten sandwiches and dirty cups in sight and ensure that you have cover for the stand when you need to leave it – even if you are only nipping to the loo!

EcoEvents: Creating positive communications. There will always be 3 things on your guest list – profit, people, planet. We design and build your exhibition stand with these in mind from conception to build to de-rig. Contact: sam@ecoevents.com (0845 521 0120)

Summer edition: CertainShops newsletter

Newsletter No Comments »

If you only want to pay professionals who other people rave about, then you’re in the right place. CertainShops – professionals online. The certain way of doing business.

SUZY’S DIARY

Badgered into providing a `summer holiday’ for my tribe I dragged them up to Southwold for a few days of camping.  While the children amused themselves by playing `dodge the jellyfish’, I fell into a panic when a flyer appeared through my tent door, announcing a suspected radioactive leak from the nearby Sizewell nucleur power station.

Thank goodness for CertainShops.  I locked into the campsite wireless connection and contacted the word of mouth recommended professionals to check up on the state of my Will, spoke to wellbeing professionals about how to minimise the effects of exposure to radioctivity, and emailed for legal advice on whether I could sue the government for spoiling my holiday.

By teatime the children had moved onto frisbying the beached jellyfish back into the sea, and I discovered that the flyers were a practical joke by one of the other campers.  Ha ha.  The next summer holiday is going to be booked via CertainShops somewhere less…. dangerous.

The Starting Over Show is…. starting over!

SOS is starting over right in the heart of Brighton at the Barcelo Old Ship Hotel on Sunday 15 March 2009.

4 space options each including comfortable seating, a table, option to include your own display stand, and tea and coffee supplied all day.

Key speaker on the day is novelist and weekly Mail columnist Anna Pasternak.

Existing exhibitors will receive a more relaxed and communicative environment at a fantastic venue at the original price.  The new exhibitor’s information is here:

Some of our exhibitors will be able to give talks in the speakers room, but we also offer a free option of a podcast interview. These short interviews will be made available as mp3 audio podcasts which you can put onto your own websites.

We are inviting you to join us in person at the new venue on Saturday 11 October 2008 for a short presentation and networking with other existing and potential exhibitors between 2 – 4pm (and we can carry on networking after that) where your contribution, ideas and feedback on the forthcoming SOS event will be welcomed.  Numbers are limited so if you are keen to join us, please contact me at: suzy (at) startingovershow.co.uk.

Our event website has been enhanced and can be viewed at www.startingovershow.co.uk

We also have a resource website in ongoing development which I invite you to contribute to. An `information page’ that would be of value to visitors to the site, recommended books, a personal story for our blog? I want www.starting-over.co.uk, the SOS Village, to become the first place people come to find resources, information and inspiration to help them when they are starting over.

Fab HR and CSR opportunity that will cost you nothing

The Starting Over Show is the first UK event to help people bounce back
from relationship break ups and life crises. On the day, we’ll create a safe
haven in which soon-to-be singletons can take professional advice to build
the confidence and skills they need to go it alone.

If you would like to access free tickets to this innovative and life changing event
The Starting Over Show are happy to offer you a partnership opportunity since the balance of legal, financial and well-being advice at the show is a great way to empower people who are going through life changing situations like relationship breakdown, redundancy or early retirement.
If you would like to share the promotional code with clients or staff – a real boost to your corporate social responsibility and a valuable HR resource – or discuss further how SOS could provide an ongoing and low cost support to your staff, please contact me at suzy (at) startingovershow.co.uk.

“How do we get some free tickets to SOS and create some useful statistics?”

Thank you to all of you who have contributed by doing a really quick survey, and the special code for getting free tickets is on it’s way during the next few weeks.

There has been a great response and the data from it has formed the research behind our recent press release “Credit Crunch Divorces make Cash for local business“. If I say so myself, it is a very interesting article!

But a few more responses would make the statistics even more useful so If you could spare three minutes to help me get some answers to some serious questions (well, most of them are serious) I will say thank you by offering some free tickets (you may have a friend you would like to give them to) for the UK’s first ever divorce fair – the Starting Over Show in Brighton on Sunday 15 March 2009.

Or paste this link into your browser: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=ZyY6t_2bG1A9MsCkfYJGvx8g_3d_3d

It really is quick and simple – and your answers to these very few questions will be valuable. I will of course share the results of the survey and you are welcome to make use of the information as long as it is credited appropriately.

Get some free tickets to this unique event now!

We have extended the competition a little longer as the holiday season got in the way a bit, so there is still time to enter as the competition now doesn’t close until Tuesday 30 September 2008 – but that is the final deadline I’m afraid.

If you need some smart but unstuffy photos to boost your professional image, or you want some spontaneous and eternal memories of your family recorded, Scott will make that happen. AND you can have the digital negatives too, which is not something every photographer gives up lightly, especially not for free.

Treasure Hunt clue:

Really Useful Free Tools for Websites and Blogs

If any of your websites are stuck in the search
engines and you can’t bump them up to page one no
matter what you do, here’s something that will
work like dynamite, according to Jeff Alderson and
Charles Kirkland:

http://www.webtoolsnow.com

It’s even free. Keeping on top of the latest SEO trends is time-consuming. Things changes constantly and
using software that stays on top of the latest trends saves you a ton of time and boosts your
profits at the same time.

Now, you don’t just need traffic. You need affiliates to promote your product too.

Affiliates will send highly quality traffic to your site but only if you provide them with the
tools they need to promote your product.

When I check out an affiliate product and see that they provide no affiliate resources
whatsoever I usually can’t be bothered to promote them.

This is why Free Web Tools gives you software that automatically generates a resource page for
affiliates and templates for all the promo materials they need. It even automatically embeds
your affiliates’ code into the materials. Pretty slick.

Writing comments on blogs is a great way to build backlinks and increase traffic to your site.

But it’s so much work to manually find the right blogs.

So you’ll also get software that does this work for you.

At a glance you’ll see the sites that are worthy of your time and get all the relevant data about
those sites at a glance.

P. S. The software comes with giveaway rights so you can pass it on to your subscribers, if you’d
like. Which is why I’m passing it on to you.

Power of Attorney – why it is so important to get it right

This is relevant to any of you with Critical Illness Protection, Income Protection, Private Medical Insurance and/or Waiver of Premium Benefit.
Under the new Mental Capacity 2005, which came into effect on 1st October 2007, if your critical illness, total and permanent disability or other illness or accident results in mental incapacity (For example being temporarily unconscious in hospital after an accident), you would be unable to claim your policy proceeds.

Furthermore, no body else would be able to claim on your behalf unless they have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place before the event.

Alternatively, somebody may apply for similar powers to be authorised by the Office of the Public Guardian after the event. (Assuming of course that there is somebody who wishes to take on such a responsibility at the time)
However;

1. They may not be the person whom you would have selected.

2. It may take up to six months to gain such power after the event.

3. It may cost over £2,000.00 to gain such power after the event.

4. If no-one puts them self forward to act, the Office of the Public Guardian will appoint their own Attorney to act for you and in such circumstances; the Attorney would have the power to be funded by your assets.

All of you with single life Critical Illness policies, PHI policies or other income protection policies, Private Medical Insurance policies and/or Waiver of Premium Benefit in respect of any policies or plans (Including Personal Pensions), should have a Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney arrangement in place as a minimum to ensure that they choose who would look after their affairs and manage such a claim on your behalf and to provide the legal authority for such a selected person to act on your behalf.

If you wish to use the proceeds of your insurance to fund any medical care and/or have clear views in respect of how you would be cared for in such circumstances, you also require a Personal Welfare Power of Attorney arrangement in place for the same reasons.

Every one of you who has Critical Illness policies, PHI policies or other income protection policies, Private Medical Insurance policies and/or Waiver of Premium Benefit in respect of any policies or plans (Including Personal Pensions, should be referred to an expert in this area.

I myself am experienced in this area and can guide you through and create the most appropriate Lasting Power of Attorney arrangements for your purposes.

As part of my service, I certificate the Power of Attorney documents and I also make contact with your selected Attorneys which may result in such Attorneys needing advice from financial advisors.

It is essential to be properly advised and protected in light of new legislation, and my meeting with clients and discussing this area or any other
matters, will cost nothing and will not place you under any obligation to proceed with my recommendations.

SUZY’S DIARY

Having won a week in Corfu I was not about to leave my laptop behind, but with no internet connection to hand and a business plan to complete, being stuck on a Greek island could have been a problem.  Especially when trudging up the hill in search of broadband in the blazing sun, I noticed that the locals started to take on the qualities of characters from the John Fowles novel The Magus.

Thank goodness for CertainShops.  When I finally staggered into a bar with a wireless connection I was able to contact a business consultant, contract lawyer and a website designer to get the advice and the quotes I needed.  After the obligatory several Greek brandies the journey back down the hill was easy, though strangely it took even longer to get back to the villa than it had done to climb the hill.

With the business plan underway, I could finish reading The Magus the next morning.  If only I could focus on the words.  Sunstroke I guess.

THE CERTAIN WAY OF LIVING LIFE

“What’s the latest news?”

I had to to take my three young children into London last Saturday for a photo shoot with Eve Magazine.

A women’s glossy magazine with a readership of 318,000, average age of reader at 37 years and 85% ABC1 profile, it was worth dragging the kids out of bed at 6.30am and having the photographer bribing them with sweets and e-numbers by the score.

We should be featured in the issue that comes out at the end of August.

“How did the winner of the Venice accommodation feel about their trip?”

The winner of three nights in Venice was Kathryn Colas of Simply Hormones. This is what she told us:

“Venice was great, accommodation especially so, as far from the madding crowd (but not too far!).  Prices in local bars and restaurants reflected what the locals would pay rather than the inflated tourist prices in centre of Venice. I actually passed the prize onto my eldest daughter, Sara, who’s 30. She went with a girlfriend and hasn’t stopped raving about it. They were given lots of local information on sightseeing sans crowds. Would recommend it to everyone, fallen in love with Venice! I couldn’t go in the end as crossed with a last minute flight my husband booked to Spain.

My husband and I are going to Italy mid-July, booking through Jeanie Travel, also passing through Venice, so thoroughly looking forward to going there armed with my daughter’s experience of avoiding the usual crowds. Annarosa and I have communicated through emails on a few occasions and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her facility to others.”

For any CertainShops members there is a special offer rate for staying at Ca’della Corte, of 120 euros per night tax and breakfast included.

“Any interesting articles/blogs?”

Just read a really interesting article by Brad King about how journalism is being utterly transformed because of the internet, and felt the need to turn my comments on the article into a short posting.

My first real foray into PR has been an exciting one – on the one hand, I shall be featured in women’s magazines and the national press as the producer of the Starting Over Show, shamelessly bearing my own personal story to the world. On the other hand, I am enjoying writing press releases for the event to highlight issues that it brings to light, and really feeling that there is a gulf between creating and writing copy for even respectable broadsheets, and the more thoughtful, less homogonised writing for blogs.

One experience that Brad King relates rang true, and is very significant since many other recipients of ‘news’ will have the same experience – and that experience will affect the future of journalism.

“Until the 1980s, media outlets were the sole provider of information. If you wanted to find out what was happening, you turned on the TV, listened to the radio or read the newspaper.

Last night, I found out George Carlin had passed away through a Twitter post, logged on to MySpace to see what my friends had said and then watched his old routines on YouTube while I was reading Wikipedia about his life.

I still haven’t visited a newspaper site because I have no desire to read some reported story.

I don’t need to.”

My comments to the article went as follows: “Excellent article. I am currently involved in the media in different capacities. I rely on Twitter for news and hardly ever read the newspapers, but ironically I am currently being interviewed for features in womens’ magazines with story twists and ‘angles’ that make good copy, but may end up trivialising the real story underneath.

I create my own surveys to get data for my own press articles, writing about the real issues behind ‘my story’, relying on social networking hubs and the web for stats and real opinions. But I fear these will be given a ‘truer’ reflection in the blog versions I post than in the final press release draft, as the traditional press audience appears to prefer a dumbed down version of the news – or the news editors think they do.

In other words, ‘real news’ now comes from and is created by the activists online, whereas the paper news speaks to a generation brought up on comic book papers discussing issues devoid of complexity. The real mass media is what people are talking about on Twitter and Facebook, but for me it has increasingly more substance and relevance than even the broadsheets can muster. Online articles like this, for example.”

David Van Sertima, e-alph1 – Internet Marketing and Web Design

Is email dead in the water as a marketing tool?

With so much spam and so little time to even read emails let alone respond to them, it easy easy to dismiss email as anything more than a way to `keep in touch’ and share information – assuming it actually makes it through into the recipients email box.  But internet markateer David Van Sertima reckons email is still a valuable tool.

Why email marketing is good for you.

While a slow down in the economy is certainly not good for anybody, it may have a positive beneficial effect on email marketing.  Or at the very least, email marketing should be less affected by the dreaded “R word” than other marketing channels.

Because of email’s low cost, high Return On Investment (ROI) value and the fact that it is a proven medium, marketers might see themselves directing more marketing pounds to this channel as a sure thing.  It’s a safe port in troubling times.

Why Choose an Autoresponder for email marketing?

Experts state it often takes 7 or more messages before prospective customers make a purchase.
Unlimited eMail marketing campaigns, lists, follow up messages, and newsletters.
Reliable, >99% + email deliverability, very fast.
Variety of different styles of Templates for newsletter and follow up design.
We can create and add opt-in web forms to your website.
Access to Free training guides and videos.
Expert free customer support.

Is email marketing cost effective for customer building?

Your target market will need to see your message at least seven times or more before considering a purchase. Daily, weekly, or even monthly emails are the cost-effective way to gives your brand an edge in a tough market.

The facts are -

53% of business users check their email six or more times during the working day.

34% of internet users check their email continuously throughout the day.

Email marketing works because :

It captures info – send autoresponders to gain further chances of making contact after they’ve left your site

It allows targeting – send a series of offers or follow-up info on related topics, products and services

It builds relationships, loyalty and trust  – keep customers coming back

It keeps you in touch with existing and potential clients – interact, get their feedback, know what they think

It drives sales – increase your frequency of repeat business, up-sell and cross-sell

The benefits are clear:

Email marketing is cost effective, measurable, trackable, profitable and easy to do.

SUZY’S DIARY

“Don’t cook those eggs mummy – we are supposed to be incubating them!”

My daughter rescued her charges and returned them to the makeshift egg warmer her farm school had provided, so she could babysit the eggs till they hatched. In a mad rush to get out of the house in time for an important meeting, it was bad enough having less for breakfast than I had planned, but to find one of the eggs actually hatching as I was about to leave only made matters worse.

How was I supposed to know that a chick was going to hatch out and imprint me as its mother just before going to meet my new bank manager?

Thank goodness for CertainShops – professionals online. Whilst the newborn cheeps emanated from my pocket I tried to distract my new account manager by showing him how brilliant CertainShops is. He seemed quite excited about being able to get a quote for conveyancing, arrange a photoshoot for his children and organise an event for his business team in Venice, all from his desk, and in the full knowledge that he was dealing only with personally recommended professionals.

Even my strange fidgeting and constant coughing to hide the plaintif cheeping did not deter him from offering me everything I needed to remain a happy customer. Although he did insist that I should seek immediate medical attention for my cough and nervous twitch.

PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHTS

Andy Williams – Preference Trusts & Wills

We will all be aware of the impact of Alistair Darling’s change to the treatment of the Nil Rate Band between married couples and civil partners.

We have all seen the headlines talking about the ‘joint allowance’ of £624,000 available since 6th April 2008. Now that the dust has settled a little and we start to look at the practicalities of the situation it is clear that all is not as simple or as straightforward as the headlines suggest.

Indeed, anyone being charged with the responsibility of being an Executor and in a position to submit a claim may find themselves in a very difficult situation.

Firstly, lets get one thing clear. The benefit of any unused NRB from a deceased spouse/civil partner is not automatic – it must be claimed. The value of this claim may be as high as £124,800 of course – and more in years to come.

Therein lies the first concern. HMRC are being asked to forego a substantial amount of tax. That makes the correct completion of the documentation (Form 216) extremely important.

It is fair to say that we expect HMRC to look at each claim quite closely given the sums involved. It will be to their considerable benefit to disallow a claim.

Okay, you may say, ‘its just a claim form’ but have a look at it and it is not as simple as you might think.

Consider the position of the Executor who has to sign the document to say that the answers to the questions are all correct. Consider the questions that the Executor has to answer. Take question 4 for example: What lifetime gifts did the deceased make in the 7 years prior to their death?

It is possible that the former spouse may have died 10 years previously. In which case, the Executor needs to be able to go back 17 years to be able to answer that question. How do they do that? After all, the person best placed to answer the question has just died.

How can Preference Trusts and Wills help?

As you may know, we store all our clients documents in one safe and secure location. In the event of the death of one of our clients and subject to their membership of our Private Client Scheme, we hold a meeting with their Executors and Trustees, with all the necessary drafted documents to hand, so we can help them understand and undertake their roles. We are there when we are needed. Further more, this meeting is at no cost to the said Executors and Trustees and at no cost to our deceased client’s estate.

As you also know: Prevention is always better, cheaper and less traumatic than an attempt to cure.

Therefore, we have created a new, additional and unique service to those of your clients who are widows or widowers.

We will meet them and help them by drafting a statement of affairs which will contain the information required so that in the event of their death, their Executor shall be far more likely to effectively complete Form 216 and successfully claim the joint Inheritance Tax allowance.

This service could save your clients and their families up to £124,800 and rising each year! Our fees can be as little as £175.00 rising to a maximum of £395.00.

SUZY’S DIARY

How could this happen to me? My first night in my Nicaraguan ergonomic hammock had gone well – or so I had thought. I awoke with horror to find myself twisted up like a spun thread, inextricably cocooned in natural cotton hand woven bonds. Thank goodness for CertainShops – professionals online.

Stretching for my IPhone I was able to go online and, determined to make a positive out of a seemingly negative situation, I contacted an IPR lawyer to find out how to register my latest invention – a quick release cord for people trapped in unruly hammocks.
By the time I had contacted a website marketer to discuss how to promote my new invention on the internet, requested a quote for an integrated blog (there must be others who have shared this awful experience, surely?), and contacted a holistic counsellor to help me with the trauma of my entrapment, my children had discovered me and taken the opportunity to ‘borrow’ my IPhone for an hour while they cut through the hammock ropes with the speed of a gnawing hampster.

Tonight, I shall be sleeping with a sharp instrument close at hand.

Asking the right questions:

Making a Will is not easy – it means facing up to one’s own mortality. However, the consequences of either no Will or the the wrong kind of Will can mean loss of the family home to pay for Long Term Care Fees, a large Inheritance Tax bill or the possibility of financial hardship for the spouse.

When a marriage or civil partnership is breaking up, updating a will is usually the last thing on anyone’s mind – but even so, there are some questions that are worth asking:

Do you know what effect a divorce or dissolution has on a previously written will?

Do you know what effect remarriage or a Civil Partnership has on a present will?

What happens if you are separated but not divorced?

What are the consequences of not having a will?

Starting over can be a time of multiple emotions. There will be frustration, excitement, despair and anticipation to name just a few and certain issues will either be ignored or procrastinated over. A will is a subject that most of us do not like to think about at the best of times, however, it is possibly one of the most important documents that you should be thinking about at a time like this.

If you would like some advice on wills, trusts and probate, contact Jaci Godman Irvine and she can advise you.

Creating price quotes is the initial step towards making a sale. Yet, this necessary step can be tedious and time consuming; researching product, pricing, and details from multiple vendors. You may even need to create several different quotes for one specific client. And, after all the time used to create the perfect quote, the customer may decide not to place an order. Since the creation of price quotes requires an investment of time, and since not all quotes are converted into orders, it quickly becomes important for users to streamline the quoting process in order to realize a tremendous time saving.

“How is People Power transforming the web?”

We all know that ‘top down’ doesn’t work, but we all complain that trying to create change from the bottom up can often feel futile. Which is probably why revolutions so often resort to using violence.

Thanks to a tweet from @Damiano this morning, I found myself reading the Guardian article: People power transforms the web in next online revolution which is based on Charles Leadbeater’s book “We Think: Mass Innovation, Not Mass Production”. An acclaimed thinker on technology, Leadbeater explains how net users are, by banding together, changing every aspect of our lives.

And those ‘net users’ are us. So the way I see it is, we have not just the opportunity, but the responsibility to bring about change in our society and the way we run our businesses and the way our children are educated, from the bottom up, but with one BIG difference.

What the net allows, and encourages, is collaboration. A few disgruntled cititzens are going to have trouble changing government policy, but Political ‘flash mobs’ have already swung elections in Spain, the Philippines twice and South Korea, by collaborating on mass via the Internet.

The US is spending hundreds of billions of dollars on a war to bring democracy to Iraq. Yet only 4 per cent of people in the Arab world have broadband access. The most potent way to promote democracy in the Middle East would be to get that figure above 50 per cent.

If ingenious games designers can inspire thousands of people to collaborate to solve a puzzle, could we do something similar to tackle global warming, keep communities safe, provide support for the elderly, help disaster victims, lend and borrow money, conduct political and policy debates, teach and learn, design and make physical products?

My laptop only runs Ubuntu (Windows Professional XP died and I’ve not yet bothered to get it fixed). Ubuntu is a free open source operating system from Linux, with no need for virus protection because it’s so well built and constantly updated for free.

The Linux community is the most impressive example of sustained ‘We Think’. A version of Linux released in June 2005 had 229 million lines in its source code that would have taken 60,000 man-years to develop at a cost of perhaps $8bn. Every day most people who use the web rely on open source: Google’s servers run on Linux; most websites rely on servers running the open-source Apache program. Open source could in time provide a model for other areas of life, for example turning We Think into We Make.

The part of the article that most caught my attention was this: “If we could persuade 1 per cent of Britain’s pupils to be player-developers for education, that would be 70,000 new sources of learning. But that would require us to see learning as something more like a computer game, something that is done peer-to-peer, without a traditional teacher.”Having home schooled in the past, I know that learning is a collaborative process, if any real learning is to take place. I remember a staunch resistance from my daughter Cydney at my ‘lesson plan’ – so we chucked that idea and I asked her what SHE wanted to learn about. She wanted to make cakes. She did a lot of cooking, and learnt to read (cookery books), maths (measuring), science and nutrition – even geography and history can be drawn in around the kinds of foods you are creating (she was keen on making different breads too).

Apart from already cooking whole meals aged 11 while mummy is ‘too busy’ on the computer, Cyd is like most children – naturally keen to learn and share. Somehow many of us lose that natural urge as we grow older, and people new to the idea of open source software look aghast and confused at why anyone would create something for no direct payment and then give it away. In the same way many business people are still scared of the ‘danger’ of online social networking, sharing personal stuff, being helpful to other professionals without a contra-deal in place.

And yet big corporations understand that communication and collaboration are key to creativity and growth, which is one of the reasons why companies like Deloitte encourage employees to use Facebook groups.

How about this for a rebel action….. hang around outside schools giving out wifi enabled internet mobile phones and encourage the kids to create their own curriculum via a wiki? Maybe some have already started?

I am currently researching a sustainability policy for CertainShops by collaborating with others, like Sam Wilson of EcoEvents and Lorraine Bell of Simply CSR. It has been suggested by a commenter on one of my blogs to put out the draft as a wiki so others can collaborate and we can share the results, encouraging many small businesses to create their own policies.

Watch this space…..

Free P R Workshop in Brighton

Treasure Hunt winner!

In case you missed seeing this offer in the newsletter, I just wanted to let you know that Ethical PR company Blue Rocket have kindly offered to provide a free PR workshop to their fellow CertainShops service providers and also to our newsletter readers.

They will give us a good insight into how to manage our PR with plenty of inside knowledge and helpful advice.
The proposed dates are: 24th or 25th of April – 3 hours morning or afternoon. Places are limited so please get back to me quickly at suzy@certainshops.com with your prefered date and whether you want morning or afternoon.

Their offices are at 115 Church Road. Hove. BN3 2AF (near Hove station, or a short taxi ride from Brighton station).

Why are Blue Rocket doing this for free?

Well, they are an ethical PR company and like to ‘give something back’. So make the most of it and let me know if you can join us.

The Winner of our Treasure Hunt is……. CertainShops registered user: Flora!

We used a sophisticated method to ascertain the winner – pulled number 3 out of a hat which corresponded to the 3rd entrant to send in the correct answers. Thank you to daughter Cydney and youngest son Henry for their assistance, and the loan of Henry’s blue woolly hat.

The two prizes remaining will be available to win in the next Easy Peasy Treasure Hunt. We are now waiting for Flora to decide which of the following prizes she wants. Will it be……

A sexy pair of gorgeous lady’s shoes from The Shoe Queen

A cleansing sphere, or more accurately a Tachyon Crystal Sphere Magnasite which will dispel the negative effects of computers and mobile phones

Or, a portrait photography session with Scott Collier

The image “http://www.scottcollier.co.uk/image/gallery/L4.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

The answers to the questions….?

Treasure Hunt clue number 1:
Decide which professional in the Legal Services Area would be able to help you buy your house?
(click on Legal Services Area to go through to the right place to find the answer)

The answer was: Elaine McGloin

Treasure Hunt clue number 2:
Choose the answer to the following question, a/, b/ or c/: “What should I do if I am buried in loads of debt”?

Answer: a/ Get into even more debt
Answer: b/ Hide under the bedclothes till it all goes away
Answer: c/ Have a free consultation with Fiona Monson

The answer was, of course, Fiona Monson

Well done to the winner, and you will all get another go at playing the game soon.

In the meantime, let me know if you want to join us at the free PR workshop in April…..

If you only want to pay professionals who other people rave about, then you’re in the right place.
